Cops probe concert deaths

INVESTIGATORS are not ruling out the possibility that the deaths of five people during a concert in Pasay City On Sunday was caused by drug-laced drinks or a party drug, the police said Monday.

“They may have eaten or drunk something. We are still waiting for the results of the toxicology examination. Then we will be able to establish facts on this case,” said Chief Insp. Rolando Baula, chief investigator of the Pasay City Police.

Baula confirmed that two of the five fatalities died of massive heart attacks, but they have yet to determine what triggered the attack.

“We are also coordinating with the victims’ families and friends to shed light on the case,” said Baula, adding that his men are doing everything to determine what happened to the fatalities or what food and drinks they took before and during the party concert.

“Our latest report, accordingly, based on the initial findings on the autopsy examination conducted by Dr. Wilfredo Tierra of the [National Bureau of Investigation], Lance Garcia and Bianca Fontejon have the same causes of death, massive heart attack. That was the initial finding,” he said.

Baula’s men are also set to visit the US Embassy to talk with relatives of Eric Miller, an American citizen, who was also one of the fatalities.

The other fatalities were identified as Ariel Leal, 33, and 18-year-old Ken Migawa. Baula said the family of Leal declined to have his remains undergo autopsy.

The five individuals were found unconscious at different parts of the SM Mall of Asia Open Concert Grounds during the concert organized by a toothpaste brand.

A witness interview by ABS-CBN said the concert venue smelled of drug fumes. He also claimed spotting several supposed minors at the concert.

Jenny Tecson, spokesperson of the Southern Police District, said SPD policemen were at the venue, but they were only limited to secure the concert venue.

“SPD only provided perimeter and area security outside the venue. Bouncer and the security of the party organizers are the ones who secured the inside of the venue. They are the ones who controlled the entrance, and we only have the lay out,” said Tecson.

ҬThe SPD report showed that the concert-goers were allowed to buy and drink liquor from the different concessioners inside the venue. Several hours later, while the event was still on going, the five individuals were found unconscious in the different area inside the concert area.

Police said the involved individuals were not related to each other and they seemed to be under the influence of liquor at the time of their treatment.

There were speculations that drug overdose could have been the causes of death of the five individuals and the police are looking into this possibility.

Just recently, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency revealed that a new drug is making the rounds in the local party scene.

Known as “fly high,” or “superman” in the local party scene, the drug is a dangerous cocktail of ecstasy (3-4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine) and shabu (methamphetamine) or Cialis, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
