METHODOLOGY: THE STANDARD POLL, JANUARY TO MARCH 2016

Regional areas: The country was divided into regions under the following major areas – National Capital Region (NCR); North & Central Luzon (Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon); South Luzon & Bicol (Southern Tagalog & Bicol); Visayas (Western, Negros, Central, Eastern); Mindanao (Western, Northern, Southern, Central, CARAGA, ARMM).

Sample sizes, error margins and application of regional weights: This poll was conducted among a statistically representative sample of 3,000 likely voters nationwide, interviewed in-person.  Sample sizes of 300 in the National Capital Region, 700 in North & Central Luzon, 700 in South Luzon & Bicol, 600 in the Visayas and 700 in Mindanao were interviewed.  To produce national estimates, data are weighted to reflect the actual number of biometrically registered voters per region.  The error margin for analyzing national estimates is +/-1.8 percent at a 95 percent confidence level.  The error for subgroups is higher.

Sampling distribution:  The proportional distribution of sample areas by region, province and highly urbanized cities was based on the latest available COMELEC data (as of the 16 November 2015 ERB Hearing).  A total of 79 provinces and 40 highly urbanized cities were included in the survey.  This is particularly important in order to prevent over or under estimating vote support of national candidates.

Type of Respondent:  Given the COMELEC rule that only registered voters with biometrics can vote in the coming May 2016 elections (“No Bio, No Boto”), the respondents interviewed were only those registered voters who had their biometrics taken. Additionally, the respondents were asked whether they are sure to vote in the coming elections.  This is to prevent interviewing voters who are not qualified and who will not vote anyway in the coming elections.
